| Montgomery Hospital Receives JCAHO Accreditation.
This past spring, Montgomery Hospital received an unannounced visit by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) is an independent, not-for-profit organization that works to improve the safety and quality of care provided to the public through the provision of health care accreditation and related services. JCAHO sets the standards by which nearly all health care organizations abide. Its comprehensive accreditation process evaluates an organization’s compliance with these standards and other accreditation requirements. The Joint Commission evaluates and accredits nearly 15,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States.
Accreditation by the Joint Commission is the recognized nationwide symbol of quality healthcare service delivery, reflecting an organization's commitment to meeting certain performance standards. To earn and maintain the Joint Commission’s approval, an organization must undergo an on-site survey by a Joint Commission survey team at least every three years.
JCAHO recently began making unannounced visits in an effort to enhance the credibility of the accreditation process. Early one morning this past March, Robin Ryan, Director of Quality Management, received notice that the Joint Commission team was on its way for our unannounced visit to Montgomery Hospital.
The Joint Commission team conducting the survey included two nurses, one physician and one life safety surveyor. The surveyors spend four days on campus performing comprehensive evaluations of nearly every health delivery system throughout the hospital. Included in their survey was a complete evaluation of our Home Care/Hospice program.
One technique used by the JCAHO team is the Tracer Method in which the team methodically traces the path of a patient in the hospital from the time he arrives until the time of discharge. Each step along the way is observed and evaluated. At the end of the four-day evaluation process the Joint Commission reviews its observations and makes a recommendation for accreditation.
We are proud to announce that the Joint Commission has again extended Montgomery Hospital and the Home Care/Hospice program with its seal of approval for accreditation. The standards set by JACHO are targets that all health care institutions aim to achieve. At Montgomery Hospital, we strive to not only meet - but exceed - the JCAHO standards as we work to provide our community with the best healthcare possible every day.
