What is an MRI? Common Uses for MRI Superb Imaging Offers Precise Diagnosis Generous Gifts Make MRI Center Possible
What is an MRI? MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a non-invasive procedure that uses a large magnet, radio waves, and a computer to scan the body to produce detailed pictures that cannot be seen on conventional x-rays. Its main function is to assist physicians in the early diagnosis of a multitude of medical conditions.
Common uses for MRI include:
- Diagnosing sports-related injuries, affecting such areas as knee, shoulder, hip, elbow and wrist
- Brain, spinal, joint, and soft tissue imaging
- Organs of the chest and abdomen, including the heart, liver, kidney, spleen, pancreas, and abdominal vessels
- MRI is growing in popularity as an enhancement to traditional mammography in the early diagnosis of breast cancer.
- Because no radiation exposure is involved, MRI is often the preferred diagnostic tool for examination of the male and female reproductive systems, pelvis and hips, and the bladder.
New MRI system offers superb imaging for precise diagnosis The images produced by the advanced Philips Intera Master system are so crystal clear that radiologists can see even very small tears and injuries to ligaments and muscles. Additionally, the system’s short-bore is 25 percent shorter and less confining than a “traditional” MRI — a relief to patients who may suffer from claustrophobia.
Generous gifts make MRI center for excellence possible. The Philips Intera Master system was made possible by a $1.5 million gift from the Karabots Foundation and the Athena Foundation, located in Blue Bell, Pa. The Arcadia Foundation in Norristown bestowed a gift of $500,000 to help construct the 3,000 square foot, 10-room MRI suite. |
