| The Mammography Debate
An independent panel formed by the U.S. government has just weighed in with the opinion that there is "fair evidence" that getting a regular mammogram can reduce the risk of breast cancer by about 20 percent. A controversy arose in 2001 when a study published in the medical journal Lancet debated the value of mammography. But Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson recently confirmed that U.S. breast cancer deaths declined in the 1990's, in part, because of the earlier detection of tumors through mammography.
Montgomery Hospital has one of the busiest mammography units in the county, with over 13,000 exams performed annually. Scheduled through the Women's Center, mammography patients also have access to the latest diagnostic techniques such as stereotactic biopsy. For an appointment call 610-270-2666
