Cancer Program Awarded $86,000 Komen Grant

This past spring, the Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation awarded Montgomery Hospital Medical Center a generous grant of $86,000 to support an innovative education program entitled the BEST Team (Breast Education Support Team). In collaboration with the students from Norristown Area High School, the BEST Team program brings breast cancer education and screenings to those in the community who are typically hard to reach.

Montgomery Hospital staff began working side-by-side with students in the Health Science Learning program of Norristown Area High School in May of 2006. The BEST Team includes the Montgomery Hospital staff and a group of 400 students who explore topics related to health and life sciences throughout the year. Through the BEST Team program, Montgomery Hospital, along with Norristown High School students and faculty, are now offering breast cancer education and services to those in need. The goal of the BEST Team program is to bring breast cancer education and services to approximately 1,000 family members and friends of these high school students.

"The idea is that the program will educate teachers and future leaders on the importance of early screenings for breast health. We also believe that students’ family members and friends will become more engaged by the health promotion messages conveyed by the program when the messages are delivered by their own children, friends, or peers," says oncology nurse and breast health educator Joanne Cipollini, M.S.N. "Ultimately, the BEST Team program brings a unique approach for reaching an underserved and hard to reach population who will benefit most from education on early detection through breast self exam, diagnostic screenings, treatment and access to clinical trials," says Cippolini. For more information on the BEST Team program, contact Joanne Cippolini at 610-270-2703.
